Woodstock

The Poster - - August 15-18, 1969
WOODSTOCK, NY - - After a couple of days with lousy weather we landed at a NY State campground near Woodstock.  Yes, THE Woodstock.  45 years ago Woodstock was a hip or hippie place to be.  Bob Dylan and members of The Band lived there.  (Woodstock was "discovered" years ago by the $$$ folks, but it still has a good vibe.)
Back to the festival:  it was planned for Woodstock, but the town wouldn't give the promoter permits to hold it.  They were worried that more than 5,000 would show up....about 395,000 as it turned out.  The promoters luckily found a dairy farm about 50 miles away in White Lake (Bethel).
Over the course of 3.5-days 32 acts performed  to a mass of humanity hungry for Peace & Music as well as all forms of getting high and getting by.  History. Jimi Hendix; The Greatful Dead; Janis Joplin; The Who.
     A three-day ticket cost $18 (or $120 adjusted to 2014 price scale.)
You had to be there.  Unfortunately, or maybe luckily, I wasn't.

Taking the job seriously

Checking the perimeter

Making sure everything is locked up

I'm taking s break.  You got s problem?
CHAMBERSBURG, PA - - We visited Harpers Ferry National Historic Park today.  The site is most famous for abolishonist John Brown's raid on the HP armory to incite an uprising of those held in slavery.
While there we ran across a guardian of the peace.  Ambling down a stone wall next to St. Peters Roman Catholic Church came "Church Kitty.  You tell because this multi-colored feline was wearing  purple collar with a small bell.  CK went on to check on the front door and then sprawled out to take a break.  Unfortunately, we never learned the name of this church security expert.
The weather doesn't look good for tomorrow, but since we're near Gettysburg we may head that way.

Losers can be winners

Revolutionary War hero General Nathanael Greene
GREENSBORO, NC - - Even in defeat there is sometimes a silver lining.  The 'Battle of Guilford Courthouse" (March 15, 1781) for a piece of North Carolina woods and farm land outside what is now Greensboro was such a time.   Volunteers from NC and Virginia along with Continental Arms regulars, led by Gen. Greene, were routed by the British Army regulars.
In victory, General Charles, Earl Cornwallis and the British, suffered devastating casualties including 25% of their officers.  The losses ultimately led to surrender of the British Forces at Yorktown on Oct. 19, 1789.
The story, exhibits, statues and information boards are set out on the battleground at the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park in Greensboro.

Walking on a dirt road

Morning walk, North Carolina style
WEST END, NC - - Checking out the farm fields.  Mainly corn and dairy cows.  Note the fleece.  It's 50-degrees, but it will get to the high 80's real quick.

Pinehurst flowers

WEST END, NC - - We'll spend a few days in NC not doing too much other than visiting and some shopping (REI) before heading on up the east coast toward New England.  There are lots of flowers ..and flowering shrubs/trees...in bloom.

On the BBQ Trail and other venues

DILLON, SC - - We're on the move...again.  However this summer we don't have jobs so we're just wandering.  Lydia has a blog on what we're doing which you can link to via a link near my blog.
We like BBQ and look for new places, return to old places and make notes to return to some we've seen but haven't the appetite to try right now.  Today, just inside the GA state line, we stopped at Jack's BBQ in Kingsland.  The daily special was 4 ribs / two sides / Texas toast / ice tea and strawberry shortcake for desert.  Yes, we ate it all.  No, we didn't have supper.
We stopped at the South Carolina Welcome Station.  Great idea because SC has decided to take advantage of some of its heritage.  We now have a map of "The Great South Carolina BBQ Trail."  The 'trail' takes in the whole state and lists/shows a whole lot of BBQ.  Didn't get  map. No problem because there are billboards (on I-95) promoting a BBQ Trail website in case you are hungry.
We'll have to come back to SC because tomorrow we're heading into North Carolina for a couple of days.  Of course NC BBQ isn't too bad.

A Plover flew over...and landed

A Black-bellied Plover getting its feet wet...

...and then deciding we were a distraction.
ORMOND BEACH, FL - - A couple of days ago we headed North towards  St Augustine to see if any birds were hanging around at Matanzas Inlet.  Basically, not many.  But we decided to walk the shoreline anyway and we rewarded for our patience.  The BBP  spends a lot of its time breeding in Northern Canada and the Arctic after wintering as far south as the Florida coast.
